And this year I’m going to…

Just as I did last year, I am going to go public with my New Year’s Resolutions. If you are willing to come out and own this stuff, you are far more likely to follow through or at least appear to intend to follow through [and isn’t perception everything after all?], because why else tell everyone about them? I actually made a fair job with keeping last years resolutions, so I feel pretty good about my prospects for 2009.

1. I believe I have found the perfect weight loss plan – the stomach virus. With virtually no will power on my part whatever, I lost 5 pounds in a few days last week. That means I just have to contract another 8 or 10 stomach viruses and I will be at my ideal weight. So that is my resolution – to get sick more so I can stay in shape.

2. I am going to stop looking at depressing things like our annuity fund and retirement accounts. Instead, I am going to start encouraging the girls to move to larger houses with more bathrooms so we won’t all be cramped quite so badly when we move in with them.

3. I have decided that while I will continue to support local businesses in the form of Upstate NY wineries, I should also adopt a wider world view, which is all politically correct and very global. This is only in part due to my recently found but deeply abiding affection for Shiraz, the grapes for which apparently do not prosper in our climate – they make some really good dark chocolate in other countries too.

4. I am finally going to get rid of everything I haven’t seen or used or even wondered about in the six 7 years since we moved into the new house. I have stacks of boxes of stuff that I haven’t needed in 7 years, so how can I possibly need it at all? Yep – getting right on that!

5. I promise NOT to buy a new camera this year. Because Larry will kill me if I do and then he would go to prison and our children would cry and all of our friends would be sad and who needs that? a macro lens though….

6. Updating one resolution from last year, I think this year I will actually help Riley catch a UPS driver. Maybe if he gets a taste of one he will see they are not much to write home about and shut the H-E-doublehockeysticks-up when they drive by.

7. And one more from last year – I promise to keep serving up the goods every day here at casa dlyn. I would miss you guys way too much if I quit now. All kidding aside, I hope each of you has a multitude of blessings for which to be thankful in this shiny brand new year. See you tomorrow!

I have the simple part covered

I was thinking I would do a sort of “blog year end wrap up” today. Meh. You’ve been here, right? So you know – it has been a good year in a lot of ways and a challenging one in others. We went for walks in the woods, we cooked a lot of good food and blogged about it, we talked to birds and the dog, we dressed vegetables up and took photos of them. Part of our family came to live with us for awhile while another part is very far away indeed. A lot of wonderful people amazed me by coming back time after time to see what I am dishing out here – a humbling circumstance, I assure you. The Lord willing and the creek don’t rise, you can expect more of the same in the year to come. There – year wrapped.

Then, my friend Kate had this little gem on her blog this morning and I decided to check it out. It looks fun, but with a smattering of thoughfulness required that seems like a good note for ending the year.simple_wom_logo

FOR TODAY December 31, 2008
Outside my window: Snowing. And a lot of birds at the feeder – it is beautiful out this morning.
I am thinking: That I am glad I didn’t have to drive anywhere in this snow.
I am thankful for: The 2hr IM chat I got to have with Lauren and Ellyn last night. A chatroom isn’t like the being together exactly but we had fun.
From the kitchen: The scent of a fresh pot of coffee.
I am wearing: Black jeans, a Marine PT hoodie and cozy slippers
I am creating: About 10 things, as usual. I will finish one or two I hope.
I am going: No place today. We stay in on NYE usually, watching movies, drinking too much bubbly and eating food that is not at all good for us.
I am reading: “The Fountainhead” by Ayn Rand, “The Brethren” by John Grisham, “The Skies of Pern” by Anne McCaffrey, “Understanding Exposure” by Bryan Peterson and 3 or 4 magazines.
I am hoping: At the top of the list is that Lauren gets back home safely, which makes all my other hopes seem trivial.
I am hearing: A snow plow rumbling by.
Around the house: Is a mess, frankly. I have big plans for a major cleaning over the weekend.
One of my favorite things: In my immediate view – my beautiful Niagara Falls coffee mug. I bought it when the kids sent us there to celebrate our 30th Anniversary.
A few plans for the rest of the week: The aformentioned cleaning. Getting more prints ready to sell. Getting some recipes ready to blog. Setting up the bookshelf stereo I bought Larry for Christmas because he hates trying to play music on the computer, and he doesn’t like setting up electronics either.
Here is picture thought I am sharing:
fem_cardI am not sure what she is thinking, but she is definitely thinking something.

You can find the Simple Woman’s Daybook blog here. She is taking this week off but will return on Monday.

And with that my friends, I bid you a blessed, safe and happy New Year.

It’s not really summer, but…

I was going through some of the photos I have taken in the last year because due to receiving repeated requests, I am going to start selling prints. While I was looking through them, I realized that it didn’t seem like December anymore. And don’t get me wrong. I love winter – I really do. I figure if you are going to live in Upstate NY, where the winter lasts about one third of the year, you should learn to appreciate it.Just as they do when I am actually out in the garden, these photos just seemed to pick up my burdens, worries and troubles and carry them away, leaving a gentle sweet lightness in their stead. My heart lifts, I find a smile tugging the corners of my mouth and I remember the days when I took each photo. And I know the rest of the day will be better because I spent a few minutes sharing these with you.

Back to —- reality?

I guess this is reality. I am still not feeling terribly chipper, but it is back to work for me. I don’t have big plans for this week blog-wise. It is still more or a less a holiday week, even though I have to work, so don’t look for huge doses of high quality humor. [like you would be coming here for that normally, right?]

Despite the last minute gift of the stomach bug they had all had just before we got there, we had a great time up north. We all missed Lauren and Steve a lot, which put a bit of a damper on things, but we got to have nice long chats with both of them which helped a little. Now that Lauren only has 4 months to go, we are all getting very antsy for her to be back home again.

And because I am a Grandma, you have to see at least a couple photos of TWMFG*
We have a very laid-back approach to opening gifts. We do them one at a time and if you want to take a break to play with something, that is just fine. This truck makes the most horrifically loud chattering noise when you push it around. Makes me really glad it doesn’t live at my house. If you get tired of opening gifts the normal way, you can always gnaw on them awhile. So – cheer me up a little, ok people? Tell me something great that happened over your Christmas holiday.

What I got for Christmas

A stomach bug – from Ellyn & Co. Thanks guys. Next year you don’t have to get me anything – really.

We actually had a great time up in the north country where they have even more snow than we do. Until I woke up at 3AM Saturday morning – then I realized the fun was over for awhile.

My biggest accomplishment so far today has been eating a piece of toast. Later, I might have another one. It is going to be an exciting day – see you in the morning folks!
