Why I Love My Squirrel-Proof Bird Feeder

The evil squirrel descends the tree, humming tunelessly under his breath1“Hmmmm – look at all that yummy seed down there.”2” There must be a way to get to it.”3 “I hope no one notices me out here.”4 “It’s kind of tricky.” 6“If I could just get down there on that bar.” 7 “Maybe over on this side.” 8“Whoa! Kinda slippery.” 9“Oh yeah – that’s what I’m talkin’ about!” 10“Yum. Yum yummy yum yum.” 11“What the …?”12 “The darned thing nearly took my nose off!”13 “Rats. What happened?”14 “Must be broken or something.”15“Bah! How does this thing work?”16 “Oooooof!”17 “I give up. This is way too much trouble for me.”181 “I’ll just go back down here.”19 “I can always count on the chickadees to leave me a little something.”20

That is one GREAT bird feeder!

(Kind of pathetic, though, that we all derive so much satisfaction from outwitting a rodent. I’m just sayin’.)

Poor little tree rat! You haven’t lived until you have greased up the middle section of a shepherd’s hook thingie that has a bird feeder hanging off it. Hours of fun watching the confused little tree rats scurry up the pole, hit the grease and go sliding down. They try it over and over and over before they give up. Then their stewpid cousin Clyde comes up to give it a try.

  16. Janis says:

That is the meanest contraption I have ever seen! I’m reporting you to the local chapter of Squirrel’s Need Food, Too.

sigh…I so love reading your stories and enjoying your photos.
I think your blog could be my full time job and I can easily lose track of time as I catch up on all of your posts. I just feel good when I can get in one post a week on my own blogs inbetween lesson plans and writing.
