Mourning Doves

There are lot of birds around here. We live at the edge of a small creek with a stand of woods across it on one side and the open fields and meadows of a farm on the other. Our feeder draws all different kinds of birds, all day, every day. Nearly anytime you look out there though, you will find some of these:
Mourning Doves mate for life and stay here for the winter, rather than migrate – it is not unusual to see 20 to 30 of them arrayed in the surrounding trees. They hang out under the feeder long enough to pick up a bunch of seeds from the ground and then roost in the trees while they chew them up.They hold still long enough so that even I can get sharp shots of them. It was 10 below when I took these pics this morning. It didn’t seem to bother the doves though. The cold weather didn’t bother me either, since I am willing to suffer in order to bring these lovely photos to you. Yep – I was out there in the freezing cold, snapping away before I even finished one cup of coffee. Okay, okay – I was standing in my kitchen and took these through the window. Going outdoors would scared them away. Not to mention freezing my tushie off.

Oh Good Grief!

I decide for one day that I am too busy to post and look what happens! I am surprised that some of you savvier blog folks fell for this crazy scheme. Riley can’t read – he is a dog! This is how he spends his time:
See? He is taking the outsides off a tennis ball for heaven’s sake. Does he look like he can read and understand questions?

I will be back in a little while to put up some real nice wintry pictures I took and you can all just forget about Riley being able to post answers to your questions.

Don’t worry – she is all distracted with grandkids coming to stay for awhile, so it won’t be that hard for me to get on here – I will be back in the morning with the answers to all of your questions. It is obvious that I have a following that needs to be satisfied and like I said, Mom is just jealous.

Ask Riley

Hi gang – it’s me, Riley. Mom is in the other room, so I have time to sneak in here and get something interesting on this silly blog for a change. Mom posts every day and what do I get? Like one day? And people loved me! I think Mom was a little jealous that I got so much attention if you want to know the truth.
So here is what we are going to to do today – ask me anything! I know that you must have some burning questions you’ve pondered since my previous appearance here on Mom’s blog, so ask away. I’ll even spill the dirt on Mom and Dad! That might cost you a cookie or two though – we can negotiate terms later on. Leave your questions and tomorrow, you’ll find the answers to everything you have been wondering about.

Talk to you later!

Not as quiet as we could be Wednesday

Some of my favorite recent shots – hope you like them.

A lively little red squirrel. And, I don’t want to give out too much info, but word has it that this guy was pretty talkative when he stopped by…

This apple has been hanging on a tree over my mailbox all winter.

I love botanical prints and this reminds me of them – it is a dried astilbe flower from last summer.

The weather is still winter, but we are seeing more and more warmer weather birds. The house finches started showing up again last week.

This field is across the road.

Tuesday Afternoon Bonus Post

Remember this little bunny from the other day? Do you see anything odd about this photo of him? I think maybe when I am not looking, he has been doing some wandering…

I want to plug a blog I ran across a few weeks ago when someone else plugged it on their blog. It is Made in the USA. He has an extensive list of American companies that manufacture their products right here in the U.S and every week he sponsors a giveaway from one of those companies. Go check him out!
