Sunday

Lauren’s home photo – her favorite flower, the common ditch lily. Actually it is Hemerocallis Fulva but everyone around here calls them ditch lilies. And though I have a lot of daylilies fancier than these are, there is still nothing prettier than a really nice patch in full bloom. This patch is at the Sacketts Harbor Battlefield on Lake Ontario.
But this one is from the patch she loved since she was little – on the creek bank in our side yard.
Happy Sunday Lauren!

32 years ago tomorrow, actually. An historic event took place at this location.wedding02_sate_landThese two people, who were aproximately and 8 and 13 years of age, got married. This took place at a point in time where photographic equipment was apparently quite primitive, resulting in pictures that seem to depict events taking place at the bottom of a deep dark hole.wedding01They were darned hippies these two. They had lived together for a couple years already and while many of his friends were already married [and some already divorced as well], none of hers had taken that step. It was uncertain and scary, but they decided that they would give it a try, thinking it would make no big difference in their relationship and that “We can always get divorced if it doesn’t work out.” Unexpectedly, it made all the difference in the world and for the next 32 years, they told each other “You are stuck with me now.”

Earlier this spring, those two people had a lovely morning, tromping around this same area, which was not only the location of their wedding, but had been a favorite camping spot as well, because for awhile before they got married they lived in a van. I told you they were hippies. Looks kind of like a cathedral, doesn’t it?wedding03_state_landAnyway – fast forward 32 years. It seems to be working out ok, and now all of these people are stuck with each other.

Tagged – 7 more quirks about me

I have been tagged for this before of course, but I haven’t run out of odd facts about myself yet. Lauren got me this time.
1. I don’t make my bed as soon as I get up, but it must be made before my second cup of coffee. And Larry can’t make it – he leaves stuff all crooked and I just have to do it over.
2. I love olive juice. Pickle juice too, though not from any kind of sweet pickles because I don’t care for sweet pickles.
3. I can’t stand soggy cereal. I don’t eat cereal all that often, but when I do, I put the milk and splenda in the bowl first and then add a few bites’ worth at a time, so that I can get it eaten while it is still crunchy. The exception to this is shredded wheat which must sit until it is soggy.
4. I hate backtracking. If I am planning a day of errands, I mentally plan a route that creates a circle. It’s not something I have to give conscious thought to – it just happens.
5. I can’t stand crooked pictures on the wall. Sometimes when they are home, the girls will go around and put some just a bit out of alignment purely for the fun of seeing me straighten them. “I saw that-stop it!”
6. I am addicted to popcorn. This was a real problem when I was low carbing for 3 years. It has to be freshly popped on the stove though – I have some microwave popcorn in my pantry that is all low fat and good for you but I reach past it for the real deal.
7. If I start a book, I have to finish it, even if it is terrible. If I love a book, I will read it over and over again. I am on my third set of “The Lord Of the Rings” trilogy.

I don’t always tag people when I do a meme, but this time I am going to – some newer commenters or regulars who I don’t know any crazy quirky stuff about yet: Ruth, Laura-Peach, Bear Naked and Dr John. Anyone else who wishes is welcome to play along.

Wednesday, not exactly wordless

Remember a couple weeks ago, when I was ranting at the robins? I showed this nest which had some very tiny baby robins. This photo was taken a week and a half later. Sadly, when I went to check on their progress about a week after that, the nest was empty. I’d like to think that they were big enough to have been fledged from the nest, but I think instead it is a case of the less pretty side of nature and something got them.A Daybreaker Gazania – one of my all time favorite container flowers.Still not enough flowers in the garden to get any good natural looking shots of the hummingbirds, but I can get lots of these. I was standing less than 3 feet away when I took this. A very cool feeling!A bud on the “jackamanii” clematis out front. I love the texture. This little guy is a Colorado Potato Beetle. Pretty but very bad to have around your garden! See those little dots on his shell? It looks like he was stitched together, doesn’t it?The first few open daisy blooms.
