In Defense of Dandelions

I know some people hate them. They work diligently to keep them out of their lawn. But out here in the country, that isn’t possible, because there are just too many of them growing everywhere.dande1And besides they are kind of pretty.dande2The more, the merrier, I say.dande3Of course in another week when all of these – which are in the field across the road from us – turn to “blowies”, I will probably be singing a different tune!

  1. OMG!!! That looks like my neighbor’s yard! They are pretty. To a point…gah.

  2. Kristina says:

I love ’em too. Who could be so cold-hearted as to hate a dandelion? Their friendly, furry little faces make me smile. I pull them out of my flower and vegetable beds, and leave them be in the lawn.

  3. Pearl says:

how pretty :) in elementary school, i was friends with a girl who ate dandelions.

  4. Brannan says:

Have you seen recipes for dandelion wine? I just heard of it the other day…not sure what it would taste like, but it looks like more than one person does it, so it can’t be THAT bad. lol!

  5. Daryl says:

    they are just lovely …

  6. Laura says:

dandelion wine??? I hear its actually pretty good.
    the field is lovely!

  7. Janis says:

Hayley always picked dandelions for me when she was little. So if a small child could see the beauty in them, they must be worth a second glance. I like them, too. :)

  8. Charlane says:

what a great find!!! love fields filled with wild flowers

  9. Mud Ranch says:

You know, they’re actually quite nutritious in salads and hold a lot of herbal properties and are EXCELLENT for sheep and grazing animals because their long tap root brings up all the nutrition from the soils. They are good, and I say the more the merrier too. ;)

  10. CM says:

I once read in a gardening book that “A weed is a flower who’s benefits have yet to be discovered.” I think you’ve shown the benefits of dandelions in your beautiful picture and for kid’s to have “blowies”! I love dandelions and we’re growing a bumper crop! (I don’t know what my neighbor’s problem is!)

  11. CM says:

PS …. katespictureaday.blogspot.com has an awesome picture of a blowie today!

  12. annbb says:

You are so very right! They are beautiful. And I hear quite tasty as well.

  13. I love ’em and I hate ’em…:) I think it’s a great sign of spring once they come out and are all in bloom and make all the fields around here look so beautiful with all the yellow dots, but I don’t really like them in my garden! And they are soooo hard to get rid of!

  14. olivia says:

The cheery yellow dandelion … :-) The blowies can be really spectacular too – sometimes moreso!

  15. Debbie Jean says:

Looks like my yard right now. We need it mowed so bad!! But they are pretty!! LOL. I am sure my neighbors are not thinking so….LOL..

    God Bless~

My neighbor just told me today that some relative of hers makes dandelion wine. So see they are good for something.

  17. Dew Drops says:

Lots of those “fields” around here!! I am waiting for them to turn into puffs and take some pictures of them. They are kind of pretty in a wierd sort of way as long as they are not in my yard!!

  18. Good Yarns says:

The is the first Spring I’ve seen Dandelions in abundance….they wouldn’t dare grow in the suburbs of Southern California where we used to live. Here, they grow with abandon and I like the way the look in large meadows, on the side of the road and even on my own lawn. Besides…they are a good botany study.

  19. SquirrelGurl says:

I used to pick dandelions all the time as a child and would make bouquets out of them for my grandmother. She always happily accepted them, put them in a cup of water and sat them on her counter. I thought they were beautiful and never thought of them as weeds until I grew older.

p.s. Thanks for stopping by my blog. I switched commenting to Open ID in hopes more people will stop by and leave a note. Thanks for the tip!

  20. Donna says:

The way you photographed them is beautiful. They really are pretty.

  21. Oliag says:

My yard looks a bit like that…I’ve always thought dandelions were cheerful and they always make me think of childhood..I remember picking bouquets of them for my mother and my children did the same for me…as for eating them…love the green part!

  22. Molly says:

Thanks for visiting! The field above is amazing. I think the “blowies” are a little bit of magic.

  23. Flea says:

I loved dandelions as a kid, but can’t quite bring myself to love them as an adult. I pull them up by the root when I find them in my lawn.

  24. My lawn is filled with BLOWIES! And yes, my tune sounds very different than the one you’re singing!

    ALthough your photos are beautiful.

  25. Mary says:

How strange … I thought of doing the same post. I love seeing the dandelions in my lawn. Those perfectly manicured greenswards that my neighbors keep just seem to leave me cold. Of course, my neighbors probably curse me regularly every spring. LOL

    Love your photos!
