About a month or so ago, we were all saying that the weather had been uncommonly mild this winter. Phrases like “it hasn’t been as bad as a lot of winters” and “if the rest of the winter is like it has been so far…” or “we’ve seen a lot worse” were bandied about with irresponsible abandon. Because you just don’t make comments like that without having to pay for them later. Oh, have we been paying! I won’t go into the gnarly details of how winter has been paying us back for our devil-may-care attitude of early January. You are, for the most part, experiencing what we have or worse.
It’s the dreary grayness that gets to me. Day after plodding day of no sun, with the forecast, as far as the 10 day weather report can see, just being more of the same. Brutal. So, over the weekend, when the sun came out late in the afternoon, and shined up the sky to a hopeful blue shade, it was well worth braving the still bone-chilling cold to grab a few shots. After a month of depressing, forlorn, colorless skies, this reminded me that winter does indeed, eventually move aside for brighter days.
“Winter is on my head, but eternal spring is in my heart.” -Victor Hugo
Here in Sacramento, we are plagued in the winter with Tule fog. It can go on for weeks and it’s not only grim, but very unsafe to drive through. Thank goodness that’s over and done with and we’re back to our normal 60 degree days.
We need sun. Proven fact, as you know. I used to think that S.A.D. was a joke, but nope…it’s a real condition, and one of the top reasons why the suicide rate is so high in Seattle :(
