There is nothing more fun for a gardener than the first blooms on a new plant. And to have them on a plant that you didn’t even order, but ended up with anyway is even better. Last spring I ordered a “Ville deLyon” Clematis from Bluestone Perennials, one of my favorite mail order plant sources. It was on sale for half price so I was happy with getting a bargain. When my order came, instead it contained Clematis “Venosa Violacea”. I called the nice people at Bluestone and they promptly shipped out the right plant and told me to keep and enjoy the wrong plant. This was a real bonus since “Venosa Violacea” wasn’t on sale and costs more even at regular price.Last summer, I went down to Ellyn and Jason’s to take care of Mark while Ellyn had Anna and ran out of time so I didn’t get everything planted. Larry put in the two clematis for me, carefully following my instructions because you have to plant clematis just so for them to do well.
Clearly, he did a great job. I think this is my new favorite!
That is so pretty. I wish I were there to enjoy it in person.
Just beautiful.
Your flower photos are amazing.

That is stunningly lovely.
Beautiful! I’d love to have a clamatis but I hear they’re hard to raise.
Thanks everyone – but trust me, this is so beautiful that it would be hard to take a bad photo of it.
Emailing you Ness!
Clematis truly are not that difficult – the top needs to to be in the sun and the roots shaded by other plants and they should be planted 6 to 8 inches deeper than they were growing in the pot. Try a jackamanii – they are dirt cheap and a good starter clematis. Few plants are as rewarding – when they are happy they bloom like nothing else!
Love it —- wish I could grow clematis.
Thanks for the info on Lauren ….. can’t wait to get something in the mail!
wonderful! lovely and thank you for sharing her :)

That is a beautiful flower.
Now we know why our clematis didn’t do well.
Oh so pretty (sigh).
Gorgeous! I want to plant a Clematis here, but I am having a hard time deciding where…..and which color….
