What a Squirrel Didn’t Do – and Winners!

I am easy to please. The things that make me happy are not terribly difficult to obtain or insanely expensive. Well, except camera lenses. They can be pretty pricey, but on the other hand, I get by with the ones I have already. One thing that makes me really happy is my squirrel proof bird feeder. I told you about it here, back in February. It is very effective in preventing squirrels from wasting expensive birdseed. Feeding and watching the birds is one of those simple pleasures that I love, so this feeder, which I bought with money my Mom & Dad gave me for my Birthday, is definitely one of my favorite things. But it seems there is something more determined than a squirrel in our neighborhood now. A lot bigger too, because no squirrel did this.birdfeederIt might be useful to know that I have had a recurring nightmare for years, that I am busy with some outdoor chore, hear a sound behind me, and turn to find a bear half the height of the Empire State Building [hey – it’s a dream!] ready to pounce on me and rip me into teensy tiny pieces. Heaven only knows why my sleeping brain has obsessed on this scenario over the years, but because of this dream, the idea of a bear in my yard is not a pleasing thought to me. To say the least.

We have been very fortunate up until now, because many of our neighbors have seen bears on their property, but in the 25-plus years we have been here, we never have. And it’s possible this wasn’t a bear. It could have been a vegetarian hobo passing through and stopping off for a snack. Maybe a large branch fell upon the feeder [and then disappeared into thin air, since there is no large branch in evidence now]. A raccoon on steroids maybe? If you have hung around here very long, you know I am not a stranger to self delusion when it comes to speculations about unwelcome visitors, so I am sure I can easily wish away a bear. Anyway – the bird feeder is temporarily put up in Larry’s shop, in the hopes that this raccoon/branch/hobo/bear will be discouraged from returning for another snack when it finds no feeder in that spot. Updates, as they say, when they become available.

Now – to the winners! My trip postponed this, but here you go:

I’m Back

I was thinking that I should just wait till Monday to resume blogging.  I am still tired down to my bones.  I have a million things to get done.  But, silence becomes a habit too easily for me, so I changed my mind.

It has been a hard couple weeks and I still feel like I am wandering in a foreign place where I have never been before.   We all feel that way, and though it is much harder for my brother, personally, I would prefer to suffer myself than to see someone else do it.  He is handling things far better than I can imagine I would, and we are all hounding him on a daily basis to make sure he is getting along ok.

A few months ago, Scott’s dog, Zoe died.  He’d had her for 12 years and she went through some big changes in his life with him.  Before Deb passed away, she and Scott did a lot of research and looked around to find another dog.  They settled on a pretty little girl from Georgia and the day before Deb’s service, my sister and I went with him to pick her up at the airport.pup2Her name is Ronnie and she is a Klein Poodle which is a European size, falling between a Standard and a Mini. She is so adorable I could eat her up.

There is something about caring for another creature, particularly a baby creature that not only absorbs our attention, but sheds light in our souls. And because they had chosen this baby together, she will have extra meaning for my brother and help to heal his a heart a bit. I am certain she was sent straight from heaven.
Blessings on your day, my friends.

Checking In

I am still home until Tuesday – arrangements have taken awhile and I had a ton of stuff to get done here before leaving for Arizona. Your comments here, in emails and on Twitter and Facebook have really meant the world to me, and to the others in my family who have come and read them. Remember in the late 90s and early 2000s, it was predicted that the internet would be isolating and turn us all into a bunch of antisocial, twitchy freaks? They were wrong. Either that or I just plain like twitchy freaks, because your kind words have touched my heart, as well as those of family members who have read them, far more than I ever thought possible. So, I just wanted to say thank you.

These Ostrich ferns are growing in the back shade garden. Larry and I dug them up a few years ago from by the creek that runs along the bottom of our property. They continue to prosper and spread and they make me think of a very happy day every time I see them. This photo has a Ghostbones texture applied. We are in the gloom these days, but there is sun out beyond this, and we’ll get there again.Ostrich FernsHave a great weekend friends.

I will be away for a little

rose2I won’t be blogging for the next week or so.  We have suffered what can only be termed as a tragic loss.  The oldest of my 3 brothers, Scott, just got married on Valentine’s Day.  Yesterday, his new wife, Debra passed away.  As you can imagine, we are all in a state of disbelief.  I know I am leaving a few things hanging here – the Pay it Forward and Comment Love giveaways, but I will take care of them when I get back home.  Prayers for my family, and most especially for my brother would be greatly appreciated.  And for me as well – this seems small in the face of everything, but I have never flown before and I will have to, so that I can be there with my family.

Thanks in advance for your words of condolence – I know that the wonderful group of friends who visit me here will be offering comfort, and I am grateful for that.  Do me a favor and go hug somebody you love and tell them how much they mean to you, ok?  See you in a week or so.

Roasted Garlic Hummus

I always use lots of garlic in hummus, but sometimes I like to change it up a bit by roasting the garlic first. Roasted garlic has a depth and sweetness that you don’t find in raw garlic and it is wonderful in this hummus.

Begin by cutting the top from a head of garlic- about 1/2 inch down or so. Scrunch a piece of aluminum foil around the head of garlic to hold it upright in the dish. Place in a small, oven-proof baking dish. You can do multiple heads at one time. Slowly pour about a tablespoon of olive oil over the top, allowing it to run down inside and between the cloves. Sprinkle with a bit of kosher salt and a few grinds of pepper.gar1Roast at 325º until it takes on a nice golden color and the cloves are slightly shrunken inside the papery skins. It took about 20 minutes for this one, but the fresher the garlic, the longer it will take – just keep an eye on it. You can test it with a toothpick – it should be soft all the way inside. Allow it to cool and then peel off the skin – it will come off very easily – you can kind of squeeze the cloves out once you have them separated.roastedNow, on to the hummus!

In the bowl of your food processor, place
1 can of chick peas, liquid drained and reserved
2 tablespoons tahini [sesame seed paste – most grocery stores carry it now]
the juice of a whole lemon
2 to 4 roasted garlic cloves
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
5-6 grinds of pepper
1/4 cup of the reserved liquid from the chick peas
Cover and turn the processor on high. The longer you run it, the smoother it will become and how smooth it ends up is a matter of taste. I like it pretty smooth, but with just a little slight chunkiness from the chick peas. You may have to add a little more of the chick pea liquid to get it to the right consistency. For this batch, I ended up with 5 cloves of garlic, so taste it and add more if it’s not garlicky enough for you. I mixed in 1/2 teaspoon of thyme at the end too.processorRemove from food processor and allow to sit at room tempurature for an hour or so, to really blend the flavors, or refigerate overnight. If I manage to remember, I like to serve it closer to room temp too, so I try to take it out of the fridge about an hour or so before we are going to eat it. It is great with cut up veggies, crackers or my Baked Pita Chips, which is today’s bonus recipe.serve_porchThe perfect cocktail hour nosh!martinii_glass
