I know, I know – you might think it odd that I would be writing a post about a pre-packaged product. “Aren’t you all these fresh and natural and local type people?” Well, yeah, but we aren’t saints or anything. We like our snacks, and there are plenty of times when I get so busy that I just don’t have time to whip up a batch of something here at home. So, when I am out running around, or we are on the way to visit the kids up north, it’s really nice to have something we can grab on the way out to the car. Something that will keep the temptation of fast food at bay, until we get to where we’re going – a healthier choice that is still satisfying. Even more important is having something to keep body and soul together when we are working in the garden all day and it’s hot, and I don’t feel like turning on the oven. Which happens a lot, since we don’t have AC and it gets up into the 90s here in July. So, why Fig Newtons then? For starters, because we’ve both always loved them. I grew up in a family where we didn’t eat a lot of junk food, but my Mom did buy Fig Newtons. They don’t even seem like cookies – they are fruit! Just as I did when I was a kid, I still love the contrast of the soft cakey part, and the sweet interior with those crunchy little seeds. Yum.
And check this out – they come in these great little packs that you can just toss into your purse, or camera bag, or wheelbarrow [that’s for when we’re in the garden of course]. Those are so handy for me when I am on an all-day shopping excursion – and that is what most of my shopping excursions are, because I put them off until there are so many errands to run, that I know from the start it’s going to take all day. And when I’m standing in a checkout line, it’s nice to see a snack I can grab on the go that is something other than a candy bar – I always love that! Then, there are days like today. When I have articles with deadlines that aren’t just looming – they are downright threatening because of how close they are.
I don’t even have any yogurt in the house for a quick snack [I feel one of those marathon shopping days coming on…], but I need something to hold me until I get my work done – and I just happen to have a package of Newtons Fruit Thins right here. A perfect match with my “wake up and focus” cup of mid-morning tea!

Love making fresh newtons too!
I have seen recipes for those HBM – definitely in my plans to try at some point!
I LOVED fig newtons growing up, so I’ll have to try these. Thank you for sharing, my friend!
And pretty soon, Monet – you will have a new little one to eventually introduce to Newtons!
Those Cherry Vanilla ones look so tempting!
I’ve tried the new thin ones. Didn’t think I would like cherry vanilla, but they are really yummy. I prefer them to the soft cakey Newtons.
I’ve always loved Fig Newtons! Glad to see they come in smaller packs now- or else I would just eat a whole sleeve like they used to come in!
