Sunday Prayers

C.S. Lewis wrote some great books. A lot of people know him best because he wrote the Chronicles of Narnia. But he also wrote a lot of books geared more toward adults – very clear and logical arguments that deal with the truth of Biblical Christianity. Here is one of my favorite quotes from “Mere Christianity“:

I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: ‘I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.’ That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic – on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg – or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.

I love this quote. It is so true. Before I got deep into the Word, I always heard that Jesus never claimed to be God and that was a title forced on Him by those around Him. Of course, I heard that from people who didn’t believe He was God.

Thanks for visiting my blog. Hope to “see” you again soon.

Thanks for visiting. Have you read The Great Divorce?
It’s a good one. Have a blessed day.

Great words. They meant a lot to me when I was seeking.

I wasn’t interested in the Chronicles of Narnia but I will definitely have to locate Mere Christianity. I like this quote!

Thanks for stopping by my blog and the kind comments about my quilt.

I agree! I remember a someone paraphrasing it by saying, if Jesus was only “a good man” why did He lie? You either believe what He said and who He claimed to be, or you believe he was a liar. That really cleared it up for me.

I love this quote. I popped in on an atheist website the other day, looking for logical arguments and fallacies, and they were refuting this concept, but taking Lewis out of context, so not really making their point. Which is a fallacy argument all by itself (I just can’t remember which one).

I LOVED the Great Divorce. And for fiction, he has a space trilogy which is phenomenal, especially the alst one, That Hideous Strength. Mm.

Wow, amazing quote. I have never read Mere Christianity, but I certainly should. It makes a wonderful point that is so true. He’s either the Son of God or a Liar. Nothing in between.

  10. Mrs says:

Love, love, love this quote. God’s Word and His truth never changes! It’s amazing to see His Word is still true through the centuries, pre-C.S. Lewis even. :-)

  11. Kelly says:

Great quote. I keep meaning to read that book. Gotta put that on my list.

  12. HeyJules says:

I need to read that book, too. That quote…how powerful is that?

  13. Lori says:

I have a friend who is seeking and I am compiling notes to help write a letter to her. THIS is going into my notes! Our pastor preached 1 Corinthians on Sunday and talked about how Christ is the foundation of our faith and as believers he is our Cornerstone, but to those who do not believe, he is a stumbling block.
How I long for ALL to believe….

  14. Sandy says:

This is a tremendous quote. My favorite Lewis quote is: “You do not have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body.”

Thanks for sharing this with me.

I am so glad this spoke to people – it is so foundational to our faith & it always amazes me when people cite Jesus as a “good person” or a “prophet”. Before I became a Christian I thought He must have been nuts and to me there are still only two choices – Savior or lunatic. :)
