A less difficult interview

Back in mid February, we had an interview that presented some difficulties and while we did muddle through, the end result was not all I hoped for. So I was pretty glad to look out the window the other morning and spot my old friend, Bob the bluejay. I thought I would go out and see if he had anything to say.If you recall, Bob refused to cooperate with me when I tried to interview him before and at first, it was looking like his attitude had not changed.
Intrepid Interviewer: Bob?Bob: Why hello there!
Interpid Interviewer: Wow – I am surprised you are speaking with me today – I didn’t expect that after our last interview.
Bob: Well, I am just killing some time actually.II: Killing time? Why do you need to do that?
Bob: Things have changed a little at home.II: Things have changed? In what way? Hey – where is Harriet? Oh no – you guys haven’t split up or anything have you? I would hate to see that – she seems so nice!
Bob: No No No! We haven’t split up – far from it. We had children is what we did!II: Well congratulations! You guys must be pretty excited and happy now that you have kids!
Bob: I thought I would be, but I gotta tell ya – it is not at all like I imagined it would be. You haven’t heard noise until you have listened to a nest full of squawking baby Blue Jays! Good grief – they never shut up! And Harriet is all tied up taking care of them – feeding them and teaching them stuff and cleaning up the poop all the time. Believe me, there is no end to the poop! If I tell Harriet I was talking with you, she won’t think I am such a jerk for leaving her alone with them for so long.II: I understand it can be a bit overwhelming, but at least with you guys, they don’t stick around for long. Human babies stay with their parents for 18 years!
Bob: 18 years! Whoa – I can’t imagine how much poop you have to clean up!
II: They eventually get potty trained but I do believe we have you beat in the poop department.
Bob: That really gives me something to think about. I am kind of jerk I guess, going off and leaving poor Harriet to look after everything.
II: Life is a process, Bob. We all learn as we go along, you know.Bob: That is so profound, man.
II: Well, I do what I can.
Bob: Guess I will take this little snack to Harriet to show her a some appreciation.
II: See ya later Bob – tell Harriet I said hello!
Bob: We will be back with the kids before too long – let you foot our grocery bills for awhile!
II: I will be looking forward to that Bob!

A Ribet-ting Shopping Trip

A few years ago, my sister Weezee introduced me to an amazing store – Christmas Tree Shops. These are intriguing places, that carry merchandise you just can’t find anyplace else and to my dismay, for years, we had none here in NY. It was only on our visits to Massachusetts that I was able to shop at a CTS. Then, on the way back from our last trip to Virginia, I noticed that there was now one only 30 minutes from home! A few weeks ago, Ellyn and I decided to check it out.Despite the name, and the fact that at Christmas time they are crammed to the ceiling with things like decorations, lights, stocking stuffers, cards, wrapping supplies and gifts, this place is far from limited to the yuletide season.
See? Spring potted flowers! If you are not looking for cheery decor, maybe you would like some massaging slippers? Seems like it would be hard to walk with your feet vibrating all over the place, but what do I know?If you happen to own one of the half dozen houses here in Upstate NY that has yet to be festooned with a giant metal star, I know where you can find one.I honestly don’t know what to say about these big old distressed expression-bearing mushroom heads, so unlike them, I will just keep my mouth shut.Need some huge fake fruit?Mark wanted one until he figured out they aren’t edible and then he lost interest. You can spray a tan on yourself with this squirt-gun looking thing.Huge fruit too big? These smaller ones are bargain priced. Not edible either though.Do you ever get home from the store and think “Why didn’t I buy that?” I feel that way about this tomato oil dispenser and romaine lettuce kitchen tool holder. If you have been reading my blog for awhile, you might recall my growing affection for a certain banana bowl, and other fruit and vegetable shaped dishes. I already have an oil dispenser and two utensil holders though, and it would require some shuffling to work these in, so it is best that I did not buy them. But what struck me more than anything else was the vast array of garden decor with a frog motif. If you like frogs in your garden, you MUST find your way to a Christmas Tree Shop, because they had you in mind when they ordered their spring merchandise. I had always though it was monkeys that illustrated the “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” thing, but here we see it done in frogs.Snack dishes? Bird bath? Planter? You get to decide. These frogs have clearly been drinking and Larry’s folks are teetotaling Baptists, so we can’t have intoxicated frogs in the yard next door to them.Obviously these are bird baths – see, they have little birds already, so that real birds will know they are for them! And the frog pièce de résistance – yoga frogs! These too, render me speechless. Good extension though. On the other hand, they had boxes of Fiddle Faddle for a buck, some nice decorative glass window hangings for Ellyn and Jason’s new sun porch, a $2.99 forsythia bush that is growing like a weed and this tin sun face that now graces the trellis in my back garden. We won’t even go into the dark chocolate covered marshmallow and graham cracker cookies…

Isaiah 55:12

For you shall go out with joy,
And be led out with peace;
The mountains and the hills
Shall break forth into singing before you,
And all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

Spring afternoon

There is nothing like a nice rainy spring to make everything grow like crazy. We have an embarrassment of riches this year. One day of photos is just not enough when it is this pretty out there.

Honeysuckle is beautiful – this wild one grows on the bank just off the back porch. I read recently that they are rapidly becoming a nuisance because they spread so quickly. Though I love it, I can see why it’s use is often discouraged now – it is coming up all over the place. Down along the big creek, there are huge swaths of these ostrich ferns. I love them so much that a few years ago we went down and dug some to plant up in the shade garden. This is one of the wild ones. This is a hosta called Kabitan and it looks gorgeous this time of year when the color is fresh – especially with the blue vinca that has crept into the area.
Nice enough that it deserves another shot.I think the flower is a type of mallow and I have no idea what the bug/bee is, but they sure look nice together.
Have a great Saturday!

Front Door Back Door Meme – May

Before I post my photos – Lauren has arrived at her first destination and in case you haven’t subscribed to the feed for her blog, she has posted some pics: Lauren’s blog

May 16th – a LOT greener and my “Prairie Fire” crab apple tree is in near-full bloomApril 28th:April 14th:
May 16th – everything is filling in nicely April 28th:April 14th:
Just a refresher – here are the guidelines:
It is a photography meme.
1. Step out your front door and take a picture.
2. Step out your back door and take a picture.
3. Put them on your blog, along with the rules.
4. If there are things in the photos that you particularly like or dislike, you can point them out, or just explain what we are seeing. Maybe changes over the seasons or some junk in your neighbor’s yard that drives you nuts.
5. Tag as many or few people as you like – preferably at least one though.
6. Do it again next month if you like.

Here are the people I orginally tagged, though I am not sure if everyone participated – I will get around and post a reminder to everyone. I am also adding people who let me know they wanted to participate. If you tagged other bloggers, please let them know it is time to update. And new participants are always welcome – just leave me a comment after you post your pics.
