Sylvester

If you spend much time here on my blog, you know that we are empty nesters. It has been nearly 7 years since Lauren, our younger daughter, moved out, so we have become used to a relatively quiet life with only Riley and perhaps an occasional unwantedguest. Ellyn and the kids did come to stay with us for a few months earlier this year while she and Jason found a house to buy, but they left at the end of May and we settled back into our usual routine fairly quickly.

Then, in June, we noticed that someone new had come to stay with us. He was just a baby when he first got here, but he kind of grew on us and now we have become rather fond of him. He is a quiet fellow and not at all demanding. sq3 I would like to introduce Sylvester A. Squash. Sylvester is an “Argonaut” squash and presently weighs in at an amazing 22 pounds. Anyone with this imposing a presence surely demands recognition. sq1And as “squash years”, much the same as dog years, are counted differently than human years, he is old enough to join us for cocktail hour. He enjoys a nice glass of Chenin Blanc just as much as the next person squash.sq2

Sunday

I think from this photo, you can see why I have been anxious to get my camera back – I didn’t want to miss the leaves turning. Our colors are really extraordinary this year.

For those who are newer to my blog, each Sunday, I put up a photo from home for our daughter Lauren who is stationed in Iraq. [she is the point of contact for the area where she is stationed – see here if you would like to help] It is a reminder for her that we are all here, praying for her safe return.

I think she is going to like this one

blessings on your day!

Bonus Saturday Recipe – Hummus!

As pita bread is my witness – I am never buying hummus again!

What the heck is in hummus that makes it so expensive in the store? A good premade brand is over $5.00 a pound and the store made stuff at the fancy-schmancy gourmet grocery is nearly $8 a pound. The reason they charge so much is because of people like me – lazy people. The only ingredient that is difficult to track down is the tahini, which is sesame seed paste. That same gourmet store has a 12 ounce jar of tahini for about 5 bucks. That might sound a bit pricey until you realize that a batch of hummus only uses 3 tablespoons of tahini, and a 12 ounce jar is going to last awhile.

So – what mysterious ingredients make hummus so expensive anyway? Here is what you need:
1 15 oz can of chick peas/garbanzo beans
1 large clove garlic
2 tablespoon olive oil
juice of 1 lemon
3 tablespoons tahini
salt to taste

Drain the chick peas, but save the liquid and measure out about 1/3 cup of it. Put that liquid and the remaining ingredients in a food processor and process for 2 to 5 minutes until very smooth. If it is too thick, add a bit more of the liquid from the chick peas. Here is an exciting action shot straight from my kitchen – the hummus whirling around in my my cheap but serviceable processor.
I think I like this shot better though
So that was tough huh? All that arduous processing! One thing I like to do that does stretch the time needed just a bit is to slice the garlic very very thin, put it and the olive oil in the recipe in a small saute pan over very low heat for a few minutes to bring out a bit more flavor. It also smooths the garlic out some which is kind of important with this garlic which Larry buys from a guy at work. He grows it in partnership with his Dad and it’s the most flavorful garlic I have ever had, but it can be a bit much raw, in something like this. And of course, you can adjust the flavors to suit your taste – more lemon, less tahini etc. This is a very basic recipe too – you can add roasted red pepper, diced jalapenos, grilled, chopped eggplant or whatever else you think might be good. Now get going – you still have time to get some made before cocktail hour!

Rainy Saturday

The birds don’t really need to use the birdbath to get clean today – they can just stand around and the pouring rain will do the trick.

I will be back later with a Saturday afternoon recipe. Being stuck in the house, I might as well cook something, right?

Hope you are enjoying your weekend!

The words for today are …

I have one piece of advice for you – if you get your camera back from being repaired, be sure to check the settings and change the file numbering back to sequential, or when you transfer the photos to your hard drive, you are going to overwrite the ones you took a couple hours ago. Like a nice sunset and all the photos you shot for the feta salad dressing post. gah! No big deal – the photos aren’t irreplaceable masterpieces certainly and I can re-do the recipe.

So, you get my to-do list in the form of a Wordle, cause other than this, I got nuthin. Please excuse me, while I go make a salad for my breakfast and take a bunch of photos of it.
