If you spend much time here, you know of my nemesis, the pie crust, and my struggles to make a pie without anyone [like me] throwing a fit because it doesn’t come out right. While I am working on that though, I am always on the lookout for things that are kind of like a pie, but with less swearing. These bars definitely fill the bill – they are super easy, very fruity and this recipe makes a lot, so they are perfect for a dessert for a crowd.<\/p>\n
The two layers of the bars are prepared separately and then layered in the pan. We will begin with the apples. Combine, in a medium bowl:
\n5 cups of grated or finely chopped apples
\n1\/4 cup granulated sugar
\n2 teaspoons cinnamon
\n1\/2 teaspoon allspice
\n1\/2 teaspoon salt
\n2 tablespoons all purpose flour
\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4831\" title=\"ab01\" src=\"http:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ab01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ab01.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ab01-150x111.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ab01-300x222.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>
\nIn the bowl of your mixer, cream together
\n1 cup softened butter
\n1 & 3\/4 cups granulated sugar
\nOne at a time, add
\n4 eggs
\nzest of a medium lemon
\nBeat in
\n1\/2 teaspoon salt
\n1 & 1\/2 teaspoons baking powder
\n3 cups all purpose flour<\/p>\n
Very lightly butter a large [13 x 17] sheet pan. Spread half of the dough mixture on the bottom. It will be a pretty thin layer, but be sure to get the entire bottom covered. Spread all of the apple mixture on top of the dough layer.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4830\" title=\"ab02\" src=\"http:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ab02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ab02.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ab02-150x108.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ab02-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Spread the remaining dough over the apple layer in uneven dollops, leaving gaps in between.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4829\" title=\"ab03\" src=\"http:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ab03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ab03.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ab03-150x101.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/ab03-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Bake at 350 for about 45 minutes to an hour – how long will dpend on how heavy your pan is and how juicy the apples are.
