These are Jerusalem Artichokes, a wild growing variety of Helianthus. I’ve been admiring them through the rain all week, as we can see about 10 big clumps of them growing along the creek.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/art_1.jpg\" alt=\"art_1\" title=\"art_1\" width=\"600\" height=\"387\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/art_1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/art_1-300x193.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>They are edible, though you don’t want to eat too many of them at one time as they give some people a bit of gastric problem which can make mingling in polite society difficult. I’d rather just look at them myself.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/art_2.jpg\" alt=\"art_2\" title=\"art_2\" width=\"600\" height=\"373\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3177\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/art_2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/art_2-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>They are about the last wildflower to bloom around here.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/art_3.jpg\" alt=\"art_3\" title=\"art_3\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3176\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/art_3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/art_3-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Sumac is really just a big weed, but I don’t care. So brilliant that it almost hurts your eyes to look at it.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/sum2.jpg\" alt=\"sum2\" title=\"sum2\" width=\"600\" height=\"349\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3174\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/sum2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/sum2-300x174.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/>Still a lot of goldenrod around too. It isn’t what causes allergies either – that is more often a plant called ragweed.
