Kacey, over at Wine on the Keyboard, is having her monthly photo contest, and for once I actually remembered to enter.\u00a0 You can find the contest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wineonthekeyboard.com\/2009\/05\/07\/april-photo-of-the-month-contest\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, and there are lots of lovely entries.\u00a0 The theme for this month is flowers.\u00a0 My entry is &#8220;Painted Tulips&#8221;, and if you feel like giving me a vote, I&#8217;d appreciate it, but even if you vote for one of the other lovely offerings, you should go and take a look, because there are some real beauties there!<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">~~~~~~~~~~<\/span><\/h1>\n<p>When I plant a tree in my yard, I always have a sense of inadequacy.\u00a0 The size of tree that I can afford, not to mention the work involved in planting a very large tree, limits me quite a lot.\u00a0\u00a0 So, most of the trees I put in our yard and garden are pretty small.\u00a0 We are surrounded by huge old trees that have grown here wild, so my tree-envy is understandable.<br \/>\n<em>In the spirit of full disclosure, and because he reads my blog, I should mention here that when it comes to planting a tree,\u00a0and I say &#8220;I&#8221;, who I really mean is &#8220;he&#8221;.\u00a0 &#8220;He&#8221;, as in Larry.\u00a0 I have planted some smallish trees, but anything bigger than a couple gallons, and I have to enter into negotiations with the digger-of-large-holes, otherwise known as my husband.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In any case, the tree I am writing about today is my Prairie Fire crabapple tree.\u00a0 You can read another post about it <a href=\"http:\/\/dlynz.com\/?p=257\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00a0 That post is about Larry too, come to think of it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Anyway &#8211; for some reason I am unaccountably thrilled when a bird sits in a tree I have planted.\u00a0 That tree become a &#8220;real&#8221; tree when a bird deems it suitable for perching upon.\u00a0 I am pretty sure the tree gets a kick out of it too.\u00a0 And when the bird in question just happens to be our state bird, one that was nearly extinct not all that long ago, and one that we don&#8217;t get to see nearly as often as we would like?\u00a0 Well, the tree and I are just that much more certain that we have arrived.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1933\" title=\"bluebird2\" src=\"http:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/bluebird2.jpg\" alt=\"bluebird2\" width=\"600\" height=\"362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/bluebird2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/dlynz.com\/public_html\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/bluebird2-300x181.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Eastern Bluebird<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First off &#8211;
