Our State Fair is a Great State Fair

No – I am not bragging. It’s song – from a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, called – amazing, I know – “State Fair” Here are some of the words, if you want to hum along while reading this post:
Our State Fair is a great state fair
Don’t miss it, don’t even be late
It’s dollars to doughnuts that our state fair
Is the best state fair in our state

Don’t know the tune, you say? Obviously you did not live in the house where Lauren grew up. We all know the words and tune to just about every song in every Rodgers and Hammerstein musical because she had them all, and watched them over and over again. And again.

Anyway – yesterday, we met Ellyn and Jason and the grandkiddies at the fair. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a drive from Georgia, so Lauren and Steve were not able to join us. It was a fun day though – the weather was perfect and going mid-week means the crowds aren’t quite as overwhelming as they would be on the weekend.

I promised you the butter sculpture. We have one every year. It is always exciting. Ok – it is mildly interesting. My main thought looking at this every year is that it’s a huge waste of butter. Don’t let Paula Deen near this – she would be breaking right through the glass case, I am sure.butterYou can also catch a ride inside some hollow cows in the Dairy Building. Is it just me or does Mark’s cow look a trifle uncomfy?cowrideFrom a distance this looks charming – some nice statues.statue1Nope – they are a couple of nice people! They were really good.statue2Again, as promised, a freaky chicken. We missed the rooster crowing contest.chickenWe took the girls to the fair just about every year as they were growing up. After walking around in the hot sun for hours, we always hit the arena, where there is nearly always some kind of horse show going on. It is cool in there, and you can sit down and enjoy the competitions. These folks were competing in 6 hitch Percheron wagons. horsesBut really, going to fair is all about this.lar_kids

sounds like fun – did you ride the ferris wheel?

  2. Janis says:

Awww, looks like a lot of fun. That chicken is just too cute!

  3. Ruth Ann says:

Looks like fun. Did you eat any fried butter? That’s supposed to be all the rage at state fairs this year. I think they think these things up just to drive the food nazi’s nuts. :)

What is the orange tag on the back of Mark’s shirt. It looks like one of those tags put on electrical stuff to warn you of danger.

And save that picture forever. It says more than words ever could.

  4. Ashleigh says:

Pics looks fun. Seeing all that butter made my arteries clog. :)

    I have to ask too…

the orange tag on Mark’s back?

  5. Donalyn says:

The tags are given to parents at the front gate – you put info on it so that they can find you if your kid gets separated from you. Or, for bad kids, you put the info of someone you don’t like and then just pretend to get separated from them and then they get your brat kid. Not that such a thing would ever happen with my perfect grandchildren!

In all the years I have lived in Upstate NY…which is about 32 years…I have never been to the State Fair!! It isn’t even that far from Canandaigua. My husband just doesn’t want to go. Your pictures make me want to go. Perhaps next year, when I am in town….my daughter and I will venture over there. She has never been to it either! Loved the butter sculpture and I hear they have fabulous food!! Thank you for sharing and have a superb holiday weekend!!

    “Our state fair is a great state fair;
Don’t miss it, don’t even be late!
It’s dollars to donuts that our state fair
Is the best state fair in our state!”

I think these lyrics are closer to the original and make more sense.

The butter thingy is great! About 5000 people with hot cobs of corn could take care of that. How many people went to the fair?

  8. Donalyn says:

You are correct Bill – made the changes. Poor proofreading – guess I was still excited from the fair. Thanks! ;)

  9. CM says:

: ) Wish I could have been there!

I know this is from a long time ago… but I somehow found it through searching your blog. :) Everything looks interesting, and the chicken is a Silkie. :) It’s an exotic type chicken that’s really good at sitting on eggs and is used for not only show, but for hatching the eggs of exotic birds. :) being a chicken owner, it’s fun to know those types of things. :)

  11. Donalyn says:

Interesting MissR! We have owned chickens on and off over the years, but just ordinary, egg laying ones, nothing fancy. I miss having them, and we are thinking of getting some again.
